Question

Can Touchstone Get back to its previous status?

************************************************

Introduction:

Touchstone Communication was considered to be the Best Call Center in not just Islamabad but in Pakistan. In a very small period of time Touchstone Communication became of the top preferred employer by the “Youth” and also one of the top paying employer in Islamabad, Capital City of Pakistan.

The Management of Touchstone Communication Tom Solon, Michael Thorn, Yawar (Fortunately for Touchstone M. Billal Waris & Awais Malik) Left Touchstone Communication quite early otherwise what have happened to Touchstone Communication would have happened a lot sooner.

[Off Topic] The loyalty level with any company of those two individual could be guessed by the fact that they both were working in “MOBILINK” and one has left it for Telenor and the other one can’t wait … Anyways this Post is not about them however, as I said this blog is all about “Hard Truth”

In the Initial few years Touchstone Communication saw extra-ordinary growth in terms of Projects and Employees. Year 2003 Touchstone Communication was not just a company anymore its was becoming more of a Life Style. Working in the night, dressing casually getting a Salary of more then 25 K and a Monthly Bonus on the Average 50 K with overtime what else was the any CSR looking for. Having parties, ordering pizzas in office, trips all the employees were having time of there life. Touchstone was not just a workplace it was a Brand Name which gave them identity and Pride. The Call Center Training, Call Center Softwares Solutions was admirable.

With real time conversation with over 12 employees [7 CSR, 1 SLE, 1 Team Lead and 1 Project Manager] all gave the names of Tom Solon, Michael Thorn, Yawar Mubarik, as the reason for the success of Touchstone Communication in Pakistan.

Rise of Touchstone Communication:

Year 2001 Mortgage Industry was at its peak in the USA and Call Center Industry was no where to be found in Pakistan. In order to encourage more investor in the Call Center Facility the Govt. of Pakistan gave extra ordinary facilities and rebates to the Call Center Investors. Thus with comparatively marginal cost Touchstone Communication was making huge Profits.

The foreign Management from Texas was making sure they get all the cream projects from the USA in Mortgage Industry and then outsource them back here in Touchstone Communication which is way cheaper then even any operational BPO in India.

Touchstone Communication started with 2 Mortgage Projects and 1 Collection Project with 20 CSR’s with 1 Hall not well furnished, in a very short period of time evolved into 12 Mortgage Projects , 2 Collection Project and 1 Inbound Project.

This was the time when they had more projects then they can handle, hiring was at its peak. All the CSR’s were requested to check there phonebooks and refer as many people as they can and for the referral they would be paid (3K/Refferal to be exact)

More space was acquired more seats were placed more CSR’s and with more teams came more promotions so growth was picking up the pace too.

Touchstone saw such a phenomenal success that one of the Top Mortgage Lender in US Country Wide Mortgage & Washington Mutual also outsourced its Lead Generation to Touchstone Communication based on its Quality and Quantity of Leads.

Beginning of the End:

Start of 2004 one by one all the Leaders of Touchstone Communication “Yawar Mubarik then Michael Thorn” for one reason or the other left Touchstone Communication. TS by now was probably too much expanded. The Management was left in the hands of “Mujeeb, Wisely, Farah Karmali with Tom Solon not present in Pakistan”

With Over 700 employees and incompetent management [as quoted by 70 % of CSR as reason of downfall of Touchstone Communication] 2006 was the year when the Fall Started.

A Fall was quite expected where the illogical promotions were becoming a routine, CSR were not given there hard earned Bonus on time, they were denied overtime, leaves and Retention Bonus [Sort of Provident Bonus, but not exactly]

The illogical Promotions and Firing of Employees became a routine where Ali Janjua became Director, Monim Raja Director , Sana Khan Project Manager, Adnan Zahoor Project Manager, Haadia Jamil (TL) and so on all pointed out straight towards Management Blunders.

Nov 2007, CSR’s were forcefully sent on leaves, Quality Control check were started to be used as excuses for firing CSR’s. CSR’s were not even given Basic Pay’s.

Mar 2008 face to face fight between Farukh Aslam and Tom Solon. For more then a week Touchstone Communication Facility remained closed. All the Directors were fired by Farukh Aslam and when Tom Solon came back he rehired everyone and after a hard fight that went to the court according the the source the issue was settled in favor of Tom Solon and Farukh was out of the picture so were more then 400 employees.

The expansion halls were again vacated and Touchstone Communication was back to just 2 halls.

According to the latest reports, all the directors are fired and some who got the chance they resigned and Team Leads have been demoted to the post of CSR and only a few well perceived CSR’s are not working and to increase the irony all on “Purely Commission based”

Key Factors in Fall of Touchstone:

1) Fall of Mortgage Industry in USA.
2) Bad Management.
3) Weak Human Resource.
4) Ineffective Employee Retaining.
5) Lack of Internal Communication.

Now highlighting all these issues and providing all these details was also suppose to provide a heard wake up call for the Top Management of Touchstone Communication Call Center. We at Exposed Blog and all the Pakistani’s and all those guys who have previously worked @ Touchstone Communication Call Center are looking for the Company to pull itself from this predicament and regain its lost identity.

Before Ending Let me narrate few names forwarded in my emails who were part of the Success and who contributed to the Failure of Touchstone Communication.

Success :

Michael Thorn , Yawar Mubarik , Tayabba & Gerry Sans , Sid Hasan , Muhammad Ali , Ali Sharif , Moeen , Fazil Gardezi ,Asif Sandhu

Failure:

Farukh Aslam, Mujeeb Zahoor, Awais Malik & Billal Waris [Tough they left early] but feed back is still bad about these guys, Ali Janjua, Sana Khan, Monim Raja, Raheel Bukhari, Ali Razi

THE BIG QUESTION REMAINS:

I knew that this was gonna happen but it will happen this soon that was something that I never foreseen. I still want touchstone to regain its status as it provides job opportunities to hundreds of guys and gals and if it closes down all of them would be jobless.

Infect what we should be wishing is that it should grow positively so more job opportunities would be created and everyone could earn some money for themselves.

Touchstone’s biggest problem was that it kept getting rid of all the good guys pillars who built touchstone and kept promoting Ass Kisssing AJ and Mujeeb, Sana, Zahid, Imran etc
This sort of behavior is the key indication of any company when it starts loving there key players. And by the looks of it they are losing many by every passing day.

I never though it might come down to this but it has. Touchstone has started to do all those stinky things that small and low life call center people and the management used to. Like not paying you your bonus money, not over time, strict policies, not paying on time etc. Just look at the recent Commission only hiring that is bunch of crap

This fall could have easily been avoided if Ali Janjua , Mujeeb were fired back in 2005. they promoted there own and all the good guys suffered because of there dumb policies.

Infospan nexttttttttttttttttt how dumies of Touchstone are getting jobs in infospan and going to bring that down too

Touchstone is a pleague its a disease all the companies stay away from it.

don't hire any ex-touchstone employee they are pack of fools

Junaid Mirza

Anonymous said...

The real issue with the Management is basically the hiring criteria. They just hire a guy who can speak english thats it. The management doest checks any other ability weather the person is qualified enough or experienced enough or not.

And after some months or years work that guy who shouldn't be in the company becomes a team lead and then project manager and then we complain.

I hope you get the idea

Stop the blame game and get to the basics is my 2 cents for the touchstone management whatever is left of it.

My name is Russ Sandlin, I was with Touchstone before it was Touchstone. It breaks my heart to see what happened. Thanks to Kashif for sharing it with me.

Ishaq Sayeed said...

I worked at Touchstone Ft. Worth office from 2004 to 2006. This is sad. You can point fingers at a lot of people but in my opinion the major factor for the demise was the fact that the fall of mortgage industry here in US. Everything else fell apart as a ripple effect. One can also argue that Touchstone was expanding faster than it should have and then there was Farukh. Once it's all set and done, I feel bad for Tom. There was never any money for him in this and chances of him making any money in the future or even recovering his investments are slim and after doing all he did for this company all he did not get the well earned respect or even pat in the back.

Russ Sandlin said...

I agree that the biggest issue was the economic downturn. As long as Tom is a part of Touchstone, I am sure it will come back.

It surely going to come back :)

Saqib(John Tate) said...

Hi this is saqib(john tate),I went through the complete analysis report and I appreciate the person who stood up and wrote the facts about Touchstone. According to my work experience Touchstone was the ideal workplace for any youngster till Michael Thorne was managing it. He always took care of the actual machinery (i.e CSRs). The decline started when he was replaced by local management who hired excessively thinking that increasing man power will increase the production for them.
Later on the mortgage slump took Toucstone down to closing. However, miracle happened when a hard core campaign “dishnetwork” generated more than 50 percent of the total revenue, giving Touchstone a new direction. But the overexcitement among the management compelled them again to hire people and surprisingly the people hired this time could hardly speak English. Simply stated the quality was replaced by quantity, people who were not even competent enough to watch Touchstone in their dreams actually got a chance to work for it in real life and few of them were promoted to higher levels too. This act really hurt the deserving personnel who were both competent and loyal. Hopelessly, they started switching to other companies which was their legal right but the so called smart Touchstone management didn’t like it and started using illegal and immoral strategies to hold them back.
Luckily they succeeded in their efforts and held the majority of employees, but instead of compensating these employees a new scrutiny plan was devised for them, where they were deprived of the performance bonuses, retention bonuses and the basic salaries to some extent too. But worst of all was the “6days working schedule” policy which was enrolled by the mentors of great Tomslone. This resulted in the real hatred and disinclination among the senior employees including myself,(Though I left touchstone for a person and not for its policies ). At last I would like to say that I am the happiest person because I left Touchstone at a very friendly note along with a big slap in the face of some big shots. And I am thankful to Touchstone for giving me a chance to prove myself(no hard feelings, long live Touchstone).

I was amongst the 2nd batch hired for Touchstone back in Dec 2003 when it had started, was trained by Mike himself and Ray (if you are old enough you would know him) but was fortunate enough to foresee what is going on and quit pretty early, despite Ray and Mike arguing that I am making a wrong decision. Oh well, it is a pitty indeed

I spent 3-4 years in Touchstone and agree with most of what you have mentioned. I worked very close to the senior management and must say that the senior management was a group of people who always promoted their friends and discouraged or humiliated those whom they didn't like and due to this reason many girls/guys decided to leave the company.

Fight begins:

Senior management (Syed khurram the leader of the pack along with Mujeeb, Ali Janjua and others) made hilarious decisions e.g Farrah Karmally was made the share holder of the company, a guy from US was made the director of HR (believe me he knew nothing about HR) and his wife was made the head of training department. Abdul Monem Raja was promoted to directors position and also promotions were awarded to other beloved people and friends.

The subprime mortgage crisis arose in USA and many projects were closed and now the problem for the management was whom (it was not possible for them to Fire their own friends) should they fire and the firing process started from Janitors and line staff (Yes, you heard me right, poor janitors and line staff employees were hardly getting 8 -10k per month pay) and then CSR's were fired and then those managers (Hassan Malik, Gerald Sams) who were not in the good books of the senior management probably because the senior management thought them to be the agents of Farrukh Aslam. Farrah Karmally left the company because his husband( who was a very nice fellow) pushed her to get out of the shit. An incompetent lady (Tayyaba Javed) was made the HR director even though she didn't have any experience or related qualification but his sole qualification was relation with Tom Slone and party

Farrukh Aslam was kept out of the loop and when he realized that Tom slone along-with his friends in Pakistan are trying to throw him out of the equation, he came to Pakistan immediately. Farrukh after his arrival fired Syed khurram and Ali Janjua and Razi and others and took over. Syed Khurram and other fired employees were not even allowed to enter the gates of the building but shrewd he (Khurram) was and he had support of tom slone so he decided to fight. Syed Khurram quietly remained in touch with his loyal fellows (who were still in the company) and kept on getting the important documents that could support Tom slone case. Syed Khurram hired a law firm by paying a hefty amount (millions of Pak rupee)

Tom Slone came to Pakistan and with the help of security agency broke into the office and took over. Syed Khurram and other fired management was along with him on that day and then there were law suites in Pakistan and in USA against Farrukh Aslam who unfortunately lost this fight.

After the departure of Farukh Aslam from the scene Syed Khurram and party fired the remaining staff whom they thought to be the loyal friends of Farrukh Aslam. Now Touchstone was heaven for Syed Khurram and Ali Janjua and others because there was no restriction for them at all. Now new project were introduced and salary structure was changed (commission based) and poor CSR's were pushed to work on very low salaries and the interesting part is that the senior management kept on getting handsome salary. Ali Janjau made so much money out of touchstone that he has his own business in Pindi ad even his brother is now running a call centre. Syed Khurram is still in Touch stone and he would remain there for ever because he knows that he is the king and the command and control and money has has in touch stone, he would never get it anywhere else in the world. That's all folks

I remember working there for a few years. It was a good time. I have read all the negative comments and they are so right. Good people were forced to quit or got fried. Hassan Malik Gerald Sams were some of the best there. Ali Janjua Mujeeb Zahoor Ali Razi Danish Ashfaq Farrukh Zadi Kashif Saddi Farrah AKA Sid Karmali. Good for nothing ass kissing losers. I had my share of experience with all of them. Gerald was one of the best he needs to be where Ali is now or even more if possible. I worked for Gerald and he was the best manager ever and Hassan Malik. They understood our problems and really looked out for the CSR. I dont know if you guys remember Gerald Sams was the guy who fired Raheel AKA Chris Combs. He was caught posting fake leads. He also got 50,000 r.s for that. But later Chris was back as a manager can you imagine how retarded that was. Gerald deserved the post that Tayyba got but there were a group and that would have never happened. Ali and Sana what a story that boy was fired because he walked in on something everyone knows :P... If they tried to fire me for other people having sex in the office I would have been a big problem for them. Mr Aslam was a good guy Tom is an ass.

2018 this article is 10 years old and guess what Hassan Nisar killed touchstone they had the best employees who were working their ass of every single day but he asked everyone to sit 10 hours/day work 7 days a week lowered basic salaries and if you need a day off then you have to beg for it provide 100 reasons why you need a day off. Targets were increased, however, the payout was becoming shit. No promotions except if you tell that fat Hassan Nisar that he is in good shape and his muscles look good (which really did not as he was putting on fats by eating pizza that was offered by employees to get the position in other departments like QA) there was no future in this company if you get sick then say goodbye to big check they will pay you way too low. One of the managers got fired because of the crystal meth and Hassan Nisar rehired him after six months so that drug policy was just a joke. I know people who were doing drugs and their job was to bring the people to doctor's office to conduct a drug test. Hassan Nisar screwed Touchstone.

A lot of the dates are off. A good read and another story but honestly its just another version of what someone thinks happened.

I was at TS during the rise and so called fall. Quite honestly all the negativity is why TS has a bad reputation. Loyalty does not exist today. We should all be thankful that TS helped us pay our bills.

Some content is accurate but a lot is twisted. I pride what I learned here and it was a great time, lots of fun, I am sure it can still be a great place for those who value it. A lot of key folks are not mentioned.

Hi
Worked for PTC Ufone and Touchstone
Sadistic slandering suckups, anti-intellectual cowards and just plain whiny little suckups in that particular order
Makes me wonder what sort of Fc*kt*rds are working in the private sector. No wonder its seen as a haven for losers of various stripes. The kind of *ssh*les who do not work and do not let you work, do not get promoted and do not let you get promoted, don't leave this world and dont let you either so easily
Anyhow, since us DAP's, Dumb Ass Pakis, do not listen, do not learn, our tongues have made us deaf and hide our pathetic little skins behind closed doors with all manner of excuses and delusions of our greatness (so called) I gather there is no point in ranting about our collective imbecility.
